Acoustic isolation at The Julliard School is an essential component to holding simultaneous music and dance activities. Jaffe Holden achieved acoustic isolation in this renovation project by utilizing double construction, also known as the box-in-box technique, around instrumental practice rooms, faculty teaching studios, recording studios, dance studios, and two main performance spaces. Floated concrete floors were used to support resiliently-braced walls. Multi-layer drywall ceilings were suspended within the isolated walls to perfect the box-in-box technique. Acoustically-rated doors were installed in critical spaces to prevent noise from leaking between rooms.
Careful attention was given to mechanical ventilation systems to ensure background noise levels from these systems were unobtrusive.
Room acoustic treatments were tailored to the functions of each space. For example, practice rooms were given the appropriate amount of sound absorption treatments and a large orchestra rehearsal room used adjustable acoustics in the form of hinged acoustical panels.
